The last 2 weeks in July we traveled with 10 people from the Appalachian Mountain Club on a Cultural Excursion of Guatemal with Ric Finch of Rutahsa Eco-Tours. Guatemala is slightly smaller than Tennessee, its mountainous topography ranges from sea level to volcanic peaks at 13,000 feet high. Its climate zones include tropical jungles, rain-shadow desert valleys, cool cloud forests and chilly alpine plateau. It is also home to a wide diversity of Maya, Mestizo, European and Caribbean traditions.
